“All you need to do to stay tight, is tighten and release for 10 minutes each day. Kegal exercises.” Sex and the City’s Samantha teaches us so much, says Beth Colmer.

The pelvic floor, or kegal muscles are located at the bottom of your pelvis and are shaped like a hammock, stretching from bum to vagina. Their main job is to prevent incontinence (of all types) and as we age they weaken and leaking can occur.

Childbirth, pregnancy and weight problems are all factors that can stretch and weaken these muscles and keeping them tight can make sex for both parties much more enjoyable. The kegal muscles also known as “love muscles”, contract rhythmically during an orgasm and so it follows that the stronger the muscles, the more intense the orgasm will be. Studies have shown that women, who have previously been unable to climax during sex, are able to frequently and easily after regular exercise of the kegal muscles.

Like any muscle, to keep the kegal muscles strong and serving these important purposes, they need to be exercised. And the sooner you start your workouts, the better.

There are numerous devices you can purchase to aid kegal exercises, and pilates classes focus on this area of your body in particular, however going without aids or instructors is far less expensive and just as effective. And you can do the exercises anywhere as, unless you have a habit of pulling silly faces whilst concentrating, no one will know you’re even doing them!

1. You’re essentially tightening the muscles that you use to stop yourself from peeing. Try having a pee and stopping half way through. It’s not easy, but you’ll now know what muscles you should be contracting every day and the sensation you should be feeling.

2. You can also try sitting in front of a mirror to check that you are doing it right. You should be able to seeing yourself contracting in and out.

3. Contract them from anywhere between 40 - 400 times a day. You can do it in short bursts or if you find it better although it may be harder, hold each contraction for seven seconds.

4. The effects won’t show overnight, but you should start to see results within three weeks. Try using your new-found strength during and just after sex - it’ll send him wild!
